"Full text not available" in OneSearch - what does this mean?

Sample result when full text not available

When using OneSearch, items that are "Available Online" are supposedly included in databases (that the library subscribes to on behalf of students). It can feel disappointing to click on an item in OneSearch, only to see the message "Full text not available."

Sometimes, this is true, but it can be helpful to run an additional check to see if perhaps it's not connecting properly.

Answer

If you see "Full text not available," we suggest trying two things.

  1. Run a journal search to see what database might have the item. [silent video demo]
    • Copy the journal title from the bad result.
    • Click into the top button for "Find Journals."
    • Paste your journal title and click the magnifying glass to run a search.
    • Click the journal title name.
    • Click a link in the View Online section. This will take you into a database that might have the article.
    • In the database search, search the title of the article you found in OneSearch. If the database contains the article, it will provide a Full Text link to the actual article.
  2. If the journal search did not lead you the full article in a database, try searching for the article in Google Scholar. [silent video demo]
    • Copy the title of the article.
    • Open a new web browser tab and go to https://scholar.google.com.
    • Paste the title of the article and run a search.
    • If the article is available, you will see a PDF link to the right of the article result. Click the PDF link to gain access to the article.

If neither of these attempts work, it is likely that the CCSF Library does not have access, and it is not freely available online. If this happens, we recommend finding a different article. Librarians are available on chat 24/7 to help you locate sources for your research.
